Programs for Vets

Justice for Vets

Justice for Vets is a project of the National Association of Drug Court Professionals (NADCP) .   Justice for Vets is the most comprehensive site on the web for Veterans Treatment Court news and resources.

NADCP is working with national experts and federal partners to help the Drug Court community achieve the following:

  • gain a better understanding of the struggle veterans experience upon return to civilian life after combat;
  • learn how to establish partnerships with Veterans Affairs offices and provide effective services such as veterans mentor programs;
  • learn how to address the needs of veterans who do not qualify for VA benefits; and
  • learn about pending legislation that would provide funding to veterans treatment courts.

Veterans Assistance Project

The Project is designed to meet the needs of the 254,000 veterans living in New York City by providing pro bono assistance with disability benefits claims before the New York City Regional Office of Veterans Affairs. With the guidance of Justice Center staff, volunteer lawyers help veterans file claims and appeals with the Department of Veterans Affairs. Assistance ranges from locating service documents and medical records to preparing and filing claims and directly representing veterans at hearings. In less than a year, more than 160 veterans met with legal counsel, and the Project leveraged over half a million dollars in free legal services for veterans

Give an Hour

DESCRIPTION

Give an Hour is a nonprofit that connects Veterans and their families to licensed therapists who donate free mental health services. Search their directory to find a practitioner in your location for free counseling with issues such as PTSD, TBI, reintegration, and marriage counseling.

MISSION

Our mission is to develop national networks of volunteers capable of responding to both acute and chronic conditions that arise within our society. Our first target population is the U.S. troops and families who are being affected by the current military conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq, and supporting areas. Give an Hour™ is asking mental health professionals nationwide to literally donate an hour of their time each week to provide free mental health services to military personnel and their families. Research will guide the development of additional services needed by the military community, and appropriate networks will be created to respond to those needs. Individuals who receive services will be given the opportunity to give an hour back in their own community. As of August 2011, approximately 6,000 providers have donated 42,000 hours of service.
