Michigan Veterans Treatment Court offers alternatives to honorably-discharged Veterans who are charged with non-violent felonies or misdemeanors. Our mission is to help Veterans recover and assimilate into society, connect with Veteran Organizations and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. We operate out of the Office of Public Defender and we cooperate with Court Administration, the Michigan Attorney’s Office, private attorneys, the Sheriff’s Office, the U.S. Dept of Veterans Affairs and numerous community partners.
Veterans’ treatment court uses a hybrid integration of drug court and mental health court principles to serve military veterans, and sometimes active-duty personnel. Veterans’ Treatment Courts also rely on U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs health care networks, the Veterans’ Benefits Administration, volunteer veteran mentors, and veterans and veterans’ family support organizations. Veterans’ treatment courts follow the drug court model and require compliance with the 10 Key Components of Drug Courts as outlined in the federal guidelines. Public Act 335 of 2012 outlines the operation of veterans’ treatment courts in Michigan.
